Rolex Datejust - The Watch to Watch!
The Rolex Datejust watch was released in 1945 during a jubilee celebrating the 40th anniversary of the Rolex Corporation. It was the world’s first self-winding wristwatch chronometer to display the date in a window. This was revolutionary for watchmaking in the 40’s. Rolex continues to blaze a trail through the watch making industry today and the Datejust watch is still on the radar for many watch lovers and collectors.
History
The bezel size of the first Datejust was 36mm. Today smaller versions are available in both men’s and women’s watches. Larger versions, up to 41mm diameter, are available too. In 1955 the Turn-o-Graph model was introduced and the watches were used as awards for U.S. Air Force piolets who had returned from combat missions. These Datejust watches were nicknamed ‘Thunderbirds’ because the rotating bezels marked to 60 minutes and were designed to measure intervals of time.
