A Watch that Saves Lives...
Breitling has a long history that is deeply connected to the history of flight. The company designed watches that served the unique needs of pilots. The mechanical self-winding technology used by Breitling in the 1940’s led to these watches being the standard for pilots. The design and precision was especially helpful and durable in a time when cabins of aircraft were still not climate controlled. The Breitling brand continued to advance as aviation advanced. A special feature in some Breitling designs is a backup signal that resulted in downed pilots being located from ninety nautical miles away after a crash.
A Watch that is Literally Out of this World...
Scott Carpenter, one of the original astronauts in the Mercury Space Program, approached the company in 1961 with a unique problem related to space flight. The twelve hour dials of ordinary watches throughout history only served in an environment where the sun could be used as a point of reference. This proved problematic in orbit, of course. Carpenter asked the watch company of aviation to consider a twenty-four hour dial to serve astronauts. Breitling obliged and soon this feature appeared as an option in some Earthbound designs as well.
